Sciatic Nerve Pain Relief in Round Rock, TX
Sciatica is commonly treated by chiropractors and usually responds well to conservative treatment. Sciatica may consist of pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness originating in the low back and may be felt in the buttocks and down the back of the leg. Patients often describe the feeling as either a leg cramp or an excruciating pain that makes it unbearable to sit or stand. Sciatica can present itself suddenly or with a gradual onset.
Conditions That Cause Sciatica
Herniated Disc. The most common cause of sciatica is a disc herniation. This is when the portion of the disc that is protruding causes irritation or places pressure on the nerve root.
Piriformis Syndrome. Another common cause of sciatic nerve pain is Piriformis Syndrome. The piriformis muscle lies deep within the buttock and when this muscle tightens up or spasms, it can irritate or place pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Spinal Stenosis. Spinal stenosis is narrowing of the spinal canal where the spinal cord and nerves travel through. This narrowing can cause irritation and pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Spondylolisthesis. Spondylolisthesis is where one vertebra slips and becomes out of line with the vertebra above it. This slippage causes a reduction in the space where the nerves travel through.
Treatment For Sciatica
Spinal adjustments. Your chiropractor will perform a physical and neurological exam as well as a case history to determine whether there is sciatic nerve involvement. If it is determined that there is, spinal adjustments can be utilized to restore proper joint motion and alignment to the vertebra. This will reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the nerves of the low back.
Flexion Distraction Technique. This technique utilizes a specific type of table that flexes toward the foot end of the table. The chiropractor will apply a light pressure to certain parts of your spine while flexing the table. Doing so will increase joint motion and joint space, and reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the nerves.
Stretching and Exercises. Stretches and exercises are an important part of the recovery process. Stretching will help increase the flexibility of tight muscles. In particular, when there is piriformis muscle involvement it is important to stretch this muscle.
