Back Pain Causes

Below are some of the most common causes and types of back pain:

Lower back pain. Lower back pain is often the result of overuse and strain that occurs throughout the day. Many patients with lower back pain have problems with herniated disks, while others struggle with poor posture, bad work habits, old injuries and more.

Whiplash. Whiplash is a type of condition that people frequently experience when they’re involved in car accidents. Whiplash is also known as neck strain, and is a type of injury that can cause a wide range of symptoms including headache, muscle ache, tenderness, muscle stiffness, limited range of motion, insomnia, irritability and more.

Shoulder and neck pain. Shoulder and neck pain is a common problem because of condition known as “text neck.” Text neck occurs when patients spend a lot of time every day looking down at hand held devices.

Sciatica. Sciatica is a condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched in the lower lumbar region of the spine. Sciatica is characterized by pain that radiates up the back and down the legs from a central point in the lower portion of the back.

Treatment for Back Pain

At MySpine Chiropractic in Round Rock, we prescribe treatments designed to provide immediate relief for our patients.

Changing sleep behaviors. Some back injuries are exacerbated by our patient’s sleeping habits. To help our patients feel better during the day, our chiropractor will recommend that they sleep differently at night. For example, for patients suffering from sciatica, we recommend that our patients sleep on their side with a pillow between their knees. For patients with lower back pain, we recommend getting extra sleep to alleviate problems stemming from back muscle overuse.

Spinal adjustments. Spinal adjustments help eliminate misalignments, which provides pain relief to our patients. Spinal adjustments are administered along different areas of the spine depending on where the injury in the back originates.

Flexion Distraction Technique. Flexion Distraction is a technique that utilizes a specific type of table designed to decompress the spine. This is accomplished by applying a gentle stretch to the lower spine. Flexion Distraction aids in decreased pressure on the spinal nerves, decreased pressure on the disc, increased space in the spinal canal and increased range of motion in the spinal joints.

Stretches and exercises. Back injuries can cause the muscles to become tight and painful. Dr. Dreher will prescribe stretches and exercises to loosen our patient’s muscles and make them more flexible. Stretches and exercises can help with almost all types of back injuries.

Nutritional counseling. As soon as patients come to our Round Rock chiropractic clinic, we start counseling them on how they can change their eating habits. Eating right gives our patients what they need to heal properly and feel better.
