A question i’m frequently asked in my office is, how often should you get a chiropractic adjustment? Well the answer is not as simple as you might think. There are a lot of variables to consider when determining frequency of care with your chiropractor.
What Is The Treatment Goal?
The first thing to consider is what is the goal of treatment. Are you receiving care for current neck or back pain? Or is it simply a preventative maintenance chiropractic adjustment to help you achieve personal goals or fulfill exercise routines in your normal daily lifestyle.
Chiropractic Adjustments For Neck & Back Pain
As you may already know, one of the most common reasons people receive chiropractic adjustments are for neck and back pain. This is not to say chiropractic only treats those types of problems, but it is very effective with those types of conditions. In my office, it would be common for me to suggest to see someone two times per week for 2-3 weeks in the beginning for something like a disc related condition. For the more typical cases such as muscle spasm, sprain, and strain it may only be once a week or twice one week and then once a week for a few more weeks.
There is no one size fits all approach at MySpine Chiropractic Center. I will typically perform an exam on the first visit and give my best recommendations for the fastest possible recovery. I almost always suggest a follow-up visit to determine how your body responded to the treatment and I can usually give a better idea of the amount of care needed going forward.
Chiropractic Maintenance Adjustments
Another common reason people see a chiropractor in Round Rock is for maintenance type treatment. These can be patients who have just completed a treatment plan, or someone who doesn’t have pain but just wants to prevent an occurrence of pain. People will often ask how often should I get chiropractic adjustments for maintenance treatment. I like to give them an example pertaining to changing engine oil on a car. Some people drive 3000 miles in 6 months and some people drive 3000 miles in 2 days. There are a lot of lifestyle factors to consider with maintenance care. What is your job? Do you sit at a computer desk staring at monitors all day with poor ergonomics? Do you work in a shop lifting heavy parts? Do you spend most of your day bent over doing landscaping? These are all valid points to consider and they all effect treatment intervals. Someone who has relatively low stress lifestyle may be able to go a month before receiving a chiropractic adjustment. While someone who has one of those more stressful jobs may only be able to wait every 2 weeks to receive an adjustment.
